How To Submit a Tax Return for Review & Lodgement

To ensure timely review, please submit all returns using this process and ensure workpapers and tax returns are complete and accurate.

Incomplete submissions may be delayed.

All submissions are made via Tax Agent Hub.

 Tax Agent Hub: End-to-End Job Submission, Review, Signing, Payment, and Lodgement Workflow

 

1. Open the dashboard and orient yourself 0:00

  • Open Tax Agent Hub and land on the main dashboard.
  • Use the top-left navigation to access:
    • Dashboard
    • Jobs
    • Inbox
    • Clients
    • My Hours
    • Calendar
  • The dashboard shows your job pipeline, recent jobs, experience hours, and quality stats.
  • Note: the transcript uses a test profile, so some metrics shown there may not appear in your own account.

 

2. Set up your account details and notifications 0:42

  • Click your name in the bottom-left and open My Account.
  • Fill in your profile details:
    • Name
    • Phone number
    • Billing entity / firm name
    • ABN
    • Invoice prefix
  • Click Save changes.
  • Set your notification preferences:
    • Off
    • Bundled daily notification
    • Instant / individual notifications
  • If needed, go to Security to change your password.

 

3. Confirm your clients are visible 1:53

  • Open Clients to view your client list.
  • If no clients appear, check your XPM setup.
  • Make sure you are assigned as a manager in XPM or Xero Practice Manager.

 

4. Create a new job 2:16

  • Go to Jobs and click Create New Job.
  • Select the client from the dropdown.
  • Choose the return type.
  • Enter the relevant period details, such as:
    • Year
    • Quarter / month
  • Review the allocated hours shown for the job.
  • Click Create Job.

 

5. Complete the required submission items 3:12

Before the job can be submitted for review, you must complete the required setup items:

  • Add the Xero workpapers URL
  • Add the Xero tax return URL
  • Complete all checklist items

These are required before the job can move forward.

 

6. Paste the Xero workpapers and Xero tax URLs 3:34

  • Open the relevant workpapers and copy the URL from the browser bar.
  • Return to Tax Agent Hub and paste it into the Xero workpapers URL field.
  • Open the relevant Xero tax return and copy that URL as well.
  • Paste it into the Xero tax URL field.
  • Click Save URLs.
  • These URLs are then coded into the tax return workflow.

 

7. Complete the checklist and submit for review 4:20

  • Tick each checklist item, including confirmations such as:
    • Workpapers are complete
    • Supporting documents are uploaded
    • Relevant schedules and workpapers are complete
    • Returns have been validated and pre-lodgment run
  • Review the estimated turnaround time.
  • Click Submit for Review.
  • The job will move into First Review.

 

8. Use priority queue if the job is urgent 5:05

  • If the job is urgent, you can place it in the priority queue.
  • This adds 20% of the client fee as an additional supervision fee.
  • Priority queue moves the job near the top of the first reviewer’s queue.
  • Use this only when speed is worth the extra cost.

 

9. Track the job after submission 6:04

  • Check the job status in multiple places:
    • Jobs section
    • Dashboard
    • Recent Jobs
    • Calendar
  • The job will show as Submitted and then In Review.
  • The calendar shows the estimated due date.
  • Hours are not accumulated until the job is fully lodged and completed.

 

10. Respond to rework requests 7:27

  • If the first reviewer requests changes, you will receive a notification.
  • You can see the job in:
    • Action Required
    • My Jobs pipeline as Rework
    • Notifications
    • Jobs with a status like Change Requested
  • Open the job to see the reviewer’s comments.
  • Fix the issues requested, such as missing documentation or mismatched details.
  • Add a response like Addressed, Fixed, or similar.
  • Click Resubmit for Review.

 

11. Move from first review to tax agent review 10:17

  • Once the first reviewer approves the job, it moves from First Review to Tax Agent.
  • The estimated turnaround time may decrease after approval.
  • You can confirm the status in:
    • The Jobs section
    • The Actions view
    • The Calendar
  • At this stage, the tax agent reviews the job next.

 

12. Handle approval and prepare for signing 11:21

  • When tax agent approves the job, you will receive a notification that the job is fully approved.
  • The job then moves to Signing.
  • In the tax agent workflow, you need to:
    • Mark the return as sent to the client for signing
    • Record that the signed return was received back
    • Upload the signed document to workpapers
    • Enter the signing date
  • The return must be signed before lodgement can proceed.

 

13. Pay the invoice before lodgement 13:02

  • Before lodgement, you must pay the invoice.
  • Click Pay and enter your card details.
  • Once payment is successful, the return moves from Sign to Lodgement.
  • The tax agent then finalises the lodgement.

 

14. Understand the final completion flow 13:43

  • The full workflow is:
    • Submit job
    • First review
    • Rework if needed
    • Tax agent review
    • Client signing
    • Payment
    • Lodgement
    • Completion
  • After the tax agent lodges the return, the job automatically moves to Complete.
  • You will also receive a notification when this happens.

 

15. Review the invoice and experience hours 14:34

  • After payment, you receive a tax invoice from Accounting Academy.
  • The invoice shows:
    • Supervision fee paid
    • Client name
    • Job reference/details
  • Once the job is lodged and completed, the hours will flow into My Hours and build your experience hours over time.

Please continue to use this method for all lodgements submitted up to 1 July 2026. Thisinslucedes requesting lodgement of returns that have been approved via the old method.

All new submissions must follow the process above.
