Registering a business name helps participants build brand recognition early while remaining compliant with Tax Practitioners Board requirements.

What is a business name?

A business name is the name you trade under when conducting business.

If you operate under a name that is different from your personal name or company name, it must be registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and linked to an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Why register a business name under The Accounting Academy?

By law, all invoices and letters of engagement for tax services must be issued by an entity registered as a Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

Within The Accounting Academy, that registered entity is:

By registering a business (trading) name with ASIC under TAAS, you can:

  • Include your own business name on client invoices and documentation

  • Use your logo and branding

Example

If you would like to trade as “ABC Tax”, that name can be registered under TAAS.

From the client’s perspective, the invoicing entity would appear as:

Is it mandatory to register a business name under TAAS to issue invoices?

No.

You may interact with clients solely under The Accounting Academy Services Pty Ltd.

However, we strongly recommend registering a business name if you want to:

  • Build your own brand

  • Use personalised branding and logos

  • Establish market presence early

What is the cost?

From March 2026, the cost for new participants is:

$250 (excl. GST)

This includes:

  • ASIC registration fee

  • Registration for 3 years

  • Administration of the registration process

What business name should I choose?

You cannot register a business name that is already registered to another ABN.

In practice, this means:

If your preferred name is already registered under your own ABN, you will need to register a variation of that name under the TAAS ABN.

Example

If you have already registered:

“ABC Tax”

Under your own ABN, you might instead register:

“ABC Tax Services”
“ABC Tax & Advisory”
“ABC Tax Group”

Does it matter if my own ABN has a different business name?

No.
