How to complete a CURNN (nil return)
What is a CURNN?
CURNN stands for Client Update — Return Not Necessary. It is a form used by registered tax agents (typically via accounting software) to notify the ATO that a client does not need to lodge a tax return for a given income year.
When is it used?
A CURNN is lodged when a client's income is below the tax-free threshold, they have no tax withheld or no assessable income to report.
What does it do?
When you notify the ATO that further returns are not necessary, they apply an end date to the client's income tax role in their internal processing system. This prevents the ATO from chasing the client for an outstanding return.
