How to Amend a Job in Tax Agent Hub
This is about how to amend a job that has been approved but not lodged, or lodged.
1. Understand the two amendment types 0:00
- There are two different amendment scenarios in Tax Agent Hub:
- Approved but not yet lodged: the job has been reviewed and approved, but not submitted yet.
- Already lodged: the return has already been filed, so a full amended return must be created.
- The process differs depending on which stage the job is at.
2. Reopen an approved job that has not yet been lodged 0:31
- Open the approved job you want to amend.
- Select Reopen to amend.
- Enter a clear reason for the amendment.
- The reason must be detailed and justified so the reviewer understands why the return is changing.
3. Provide a strong amendment explanation 1:01
- Use the reason field to explain what changed and why.
- Include enough detail to show the amendment is valid and supported.
- The transcript notes a minimum character requirement for the explanation, so do not keep it brief.
- Examples of valid reasons include:
- client provided corrected information
- an expense was entered for the wrong entity
- a deduction was accidentally included
- The goal is to make the amendment easy to verify and justify to the ATO.
4. Update the work paper with supporting evidence and movements 2:18
- Upload or update the supporting documents in the work paper.
- Because this is an amendment before lodgment, you can usually use the same work paper if it has not been archived.
- Show the movement, not just the final number.
- For example:
- Individual tax return: show original deductions, changes, and final deductions.
- BAS: show GST/expense movements and the final figures.
- The reviewer needs to see how the numbers changed, not just the end result.
5. Submit the amended pre-lodgment job for review 3:09
- After making the changes, submit the job for review.
- The job goes back to the start of the queue and is reviewed again in full.
- This means the reviewer checks the entire job, not only the amended sections.
- Be prepared for the normal review turnaround time again.
6. Amend a job that has already been lodged 4:11
- Open the lodged job you need to amend.
- Start the amendment process from the job.
- Tax Agent Hub creates a new amended job rather than just editing the old one.
- This is because a lodged return needs a full amended return with its own documentation and links.
7. Create a new work paper for a lodged-job amendment 5:05
- For a lodged job, you must create a new work paper for the amendment.
- This is a full restart of the return process.
- Complete the original job requirements again, plus the amendment-specific section.
- In this scenario, the answer to “Have you created a new work paper for this amendment?” should be Yes.
8. Know when an amended job is required 5:21
- Use an amended job when:
- the return has already been filed/lodged, and
- you need to change it later.
- If this is the first time Tax Agent Hub is seeing the return from another source, you do not need an amended job.
- The purpose of the amended job is to create the correct unique links and documentation for the lodged return update.
9. Key takeaway 5:46
- Approved but not lodged: reopen the existing job, explain the change, update the work paper, and resubmit.
- Already lodged: create a new amended job and a new work paper, then complete the full return again.
- If unsure, contact the team for help.
